Detroit

A car accident is a break-in: the irruption of the uncontrollable into the continuity of everyday life. And it never arrives alone. Before it can be processed, it fills with images already in place: scenes from movies, the visual fascination of impact, the logic of collision trained by years of gaming.

In 2019, Montserrat Gardó Castillo and Petr Hastik had a car accident in Detroit, the city that built the automobile as a symbol of industrial power and freedom and then watched that power collapse. DETROIT starts from that event and from the questions it left behind: how a memory forms, how it changes, how it gets shared and how it mixes with fiction.

The piece works with reenactment in different forms, from the body to a live multiplayer session of Grand Theft Auto, the iconic open world video game. Built as a modular score of scenes and fragments, it moves between essay, concert and choreography. The music returns to techno as a Detroit sound and to the serial, assembly line logic the city was built on. The evening asks what remains of an experience once it has passed through fate, fiction and machine.
